The girl kept alive with VIAGRA: Daily doses of the drug boost blood flow of heart problems

A four-year-old girl who is awaiting life-saving surgery has been kept alive by taking Viagra.

Cerys Small was born with multiple heart problems and has been taking the drug to help the circulation of blood around her body.

Her family were told the youngster, who is missing her spleen and has stomach and bowel problems, only a 50 per cent chance of survival to adulthood.

But daily doses of the drug, most commonly used for treating sexual dysfunction in men, have helped to stabilise her condition by relaxing the blood vessels and improving her blood flow.

Her mother Kerrie said she was surprised when doctors told her what they were prescribing Cerys but that it had saved her life.

‘That Viagra kept her alive for more than four years and now she is well enough to keep going until her next operation,’ she said.

‘People mostly giggle when they find out what medication she was on.
